Traced origins to William Rose, d1929, who in 1881 patented an innovative tobacco wrapping machine later adopted by W D & H O Wills Ltd of Bristol. 1905 established Rose Brothers (Gainsborough) Ltd to make packaging machinery for, inter alia, the tobacco, confectionery and baking industries and for businesses such as John Mackintosh & Sons Ltd of Halifax. 1898 to 1908 diversified into motor car production and also started component, especially gear, production through establishment of Northern Manufacturing Co Ltd. Also established National Folding Box Co Ltd. During world wars made munitions, notably gun control systems, 1939-45. Production of bearings at Saxilby became a major activity after 1945. 1961 acquired by Baker Perkins
