Established in 1845 by Charles Attwood, 1791-1875, as Weardale Iron Co and reorganised in 1846 as Weardale Iron & Coal Co. Built ironworks and operated coal and ironstone mines at Tow Law including Tudhoe Colliery; later also made steel. The bankers Baring Brothers & Co took a major interest through its partners. 1852 established additional plant at Tudhoe, Spennymore, including rolling mills and hammers. Incorporated 1863. Developed into a very large business. 1899 reorganised as Weardale Steel, Coal & Coke Co Ltd. Nationalised 1951
