Captain William Scoresby, 1760-1829, was a whaler who accumulated great wealth in the Arctic whaling trade, trading in particular out of Whitby but also, sometime, London, Greenock, etc. Made his first voyage in 1785. From at least 1810 had partnership interests. Retired 1823. Succeeded by his son, William, the Younger, 1789-1857, who had been his father's chief mate until 1811. This William sailed from Whitby, 1811 to 1823, as master of the 'Resolution' and, later, the 'Esk' and the 'Fame'
