Notes:

Traced origins to c1750 when established by William Stirling, 1717-77, a member of a family of leading Scottish merchants. Emerged as a leading Glasgow textile merchant and warehouseman in his own right, was also in the Virginia trade, and also developed important cloth dyeing and printing works. Initially these were at Dalsholm, Glasgow, but in 1770 were relocated to Cordale (Renton), Vale of Leven. 1791 acquired nearby Dalquhurn Bleachfields, established in 1815 by Andrew Johnston and acquired in 1727-28 by Walter Stirling and Archibald Duncan who traded as Dalquhurn Bleaching Co. The Stirlings later combined their business with that of Ewing family and eventually merged into United Turkey Red Co Ltd in 1898
