Traced origins to 1748 when established by Richard Clare as a druggist and manufacturing chemist. Soon diversified into distillation for turpentine and paints. By 1870s also making greases from tallow. 1889 acquired by William Meadows, manufacturing chemist. 1902 incorporated. By 1900 manufacturing lubricants for cars, ships, locomotives, etc, as well as paints especially for use in road marking. Became a leading supplier to Castrol and other oil companies as well as undertaking tar distillation and making creosote, road tar, etc. By 1980s focused on lubricant manufacture
