Alfred William Armstrong, 1858-1921, established the Automatic Trading Co Ltd, a vending machine business, at London which he sold in 1888. By 1891 he was managing director of London Battery Co Ltd of Southwark and in 1892 he floated London & Hampstead Battery Co Ltd, both of which were electricity supply businesses . The latter he reorganised in 1898 as Hampstead Electric Supply Co Ltd which was wound up in 1901. Thereafter he built large blocks of flats in Lissenden Gardens, near Hampstead, which was facilitated by his marriage to the daughter of Edward Cave, builder. Emerged as a leading local property developer
