Traced origins to Andrew Yule, 1834-1902, who established Andrew Yule & Co, agents and merchants, at Calcutta in 1863. Operated on own account as merchants and industrialists but also provided agency services, inter alia managing many British owned companies involved in jute, tea, coal, shipping, etc. 1870 George Yule & Co was established in London as a sister house. From 1880s Indian business managed by (Sir) David Yule, 1858-1928, which he grew extensively; in old age he was reckoned the most powerful businessman in India. From c1920 Andrew Yule & Co and George Yule & Co were acquired by the London investment bankers, Morgan Grenfell & Co Ltd and its partners individually. 1920 George Yule & Co became Yule Catto & Co Ltd. Fully owned by partners from 1930s. After 1960 Indian based Yule business became Indian owned while remainder diversified into UK manufacturing as Yule Catto & Co Ltd. It was acquired in 1971 by Malaya General Co Ltd which renamed itself Yule Catto and subsequently developed as a leading speciality chemicals business which continues in 2009
