Traced origins to the Simpson family who were leading London water engineers from late 18th century. Developed especially under James Simpson alongside an increasingly prosperous consultancy business. By 1826 known as Simpson & Thompson and based in Pimlico. 1860s briefly shipbuilders. Early 1870s Simpson business reorganised when consultancy separated from manufacturing, the former being carried forward by John Taylor & Sons. Under Simpson family, steam engine and especially pump making developed into a leading business which from 1885 was associated with Worthington Pump Co of USA. 1903 companies merged and in 1917 UK business renamed Worthington Simpson. New factory built at Newark 1901 and London works closed 1936. 1969 integrated with Studebaker Worthington. Subsequently other owners and later known as Flowserve Pumps Ltd
