Traced origins to 1853 when Archibald Winterbottom, 1814-84, established himself as a manufacturer and stuff merchant. Soon emerged as a pioneering manufacturer of bookcloth becoming widely recognised for expertise and quality of product. Succeeded in business in 1880s by his sons and from 1887 known as Archibald Winterbottom & Sons. 1891, in order to reduce competition, promoted a merger with leading producers in UK, Germany and USA as Winterbottom Book Cloth Co Ltd with UK production consolidated at Salford. Post 1945 diversified into other areas by acquisition when renamed Winterbottom Industries Ltd with bookcloth business trading as Winterbottom Products Ltd. 1965 latter business sold to English Sewing Cotton Corp Ltd
