Established 1880 as a stone working business at Hammersmith, London, by George Wimpey, d1913, and Walter Tomes. In 1893 Wimpey became the sole proprietor. By now growing rapidly and built Hammersmith Town Hall in 1896. 1919 bought by (Sir) Godfrey Mitchell, 1891-1982, who incorporated the business as George Wimpey & Co Ltd. Developed as leading road and tramway contractors, house builders and civil engineers. 1934 converted to a public company. By 1945 its business was nationally spread and after 1945 developed internationally especially in the Middle East, Australia and Canada. 1970s diversified, notably into property development. 1990s exchanged its mineral and construction activities for the housebuilding activities of Tarmac Plc. This was soon followed by acquisition of the housebuilding activities of John Laing and Alfred McAlpine to turn the business into a major force in housebuilding. 2007 merged with Taylor Woodrow Plc to form Taylor Wimpey Plc [2024]
