Traced origins to Charles Cammell, 1810-79, and Henry and Thomas Johnson who established in 1837 a tool steel and file manufacturing business which quickly diversified into railway materials and armoured plate. Expanded rapidly to become a major producer and in 1855 known as Charles Cammell & Co. 1864 incorporated when largest steel business in Sheffield. With George Wilson, Charles Cammell in 1873 established Wilson Cammell Patent Wheel Co Ltd at Dronfield to make steel wheels and rails. Dronfield works closed 1883 when replaced by new works at Workington. Wilson Cammell subsequently absorbed by Charles Cammell & Co Ltd which merged in 1903 with Laird Brothers to form Cammell Laird & Co Ltd
