Traced origins to c1874 when Peter W Willans, 1851-92, set up in business with A W H Massey and Alexander Ward as Massey, Willans & Ward. Licensed Tangye Bros & Holman to build an engine to Willan's design. Wound up 1876. 1880 Peter Willans and Mark Robinson, 1844-1923, established Willans & Robinson at Ferry Works, Thames Ditton, Surrey, to build high speed marine engines and small craft such as yachts and launches. Incorporated 1888 and public company 1894. Moved to Victoria Works, Rugby, in 1896 and later made steam turbines and oil engines. Their engines found increasing use for electricity generation. 1916 acquired by Dick, Kerr & Co Ltd of Kilmarnock which in 1919 merged to form English Electric Co Ltd. Willans & Robinson survived as an identifiable unit until 1930s
