Established in 1875 by John Walsh, d1905, as a draper's business. Grew rapidly, renting additional premises and opening new departments. Major rebuilding program in late 1890s confirmed Walsh as Sheffield's leading department store. Incorporated 1902. 1906 furniture factory and repository opened. 1920 public company but controlled by the Walsh family. Premises destroyed in 1940 Blitz. 1944 furniture manufacturing hived off into John Walsh Manufacturing Co Ltd. 1946 acquired by Harrods Ltd, later part of House of Fraser Ltd. Subsequently rebranded Rackhams [2023]
