Established in London in 1606 when granted a royal charter for purposes of establishing settlements and exercising monopoly trading interests along the coast of North America.1607 established Jamestown settlement as its local base. Reorganised with new charter 1609. Developed tobacco growing and trading. Originally funded by shareholder investment, from 1612 it was by public lotteries in London and subsequently by 'running lotteries' in provincial towns. Closed 1624 when in difficulties and regarded as a corporate failure. The area of Virginia then became a formal English colony. Associated with the short lived Plymouth Company, chartered for similar purposes also in 1606 [2023]
