Traced origins to Thomas Bliss, son of a Chalford clothier, who settled at Chipping Norton in 1756. His son, William, 1764-1825, succeeded to the business in 1790 and established a fulling and spinning mill in 1810. In due course acquired by his son, William, 1810-83, who grew the business. Initially manufactured cloth and by mid 19th century had developed into a major local tweed manufacturing business. Built prestigious Bliss Mill in 1870s. Bliss family withdrew in mid 1890s. The business was incorporated in 1895. 1896 acquired by its manager, A H Dunstan. Noted for a strike in 1913. Subsequently acquired by Fox Bros of Welling
