Traced origins to c1666 when retail grocers in City of London. By 1709 wholesale grocers dealing in tea, sugar, dried fruits and groceries. These remained firm's staple products through to modern times with later addition of wines and spirits. In 1728 owned by Joseph Smith and continued in the ownership of Smith and Travers families until incorporation as Joseph Travers & Sons Ltd in 1889. Various styles included Smith's Nash Kemble & Travers in 1779 and Joseph Travers & Son in 1813. Did some manufacturing, eg milling spices and blending/packing tea. Opened Liverpool branch 1894 and later another in Singapore. c1945, when a public company, acquired by S & W Berisford Ltd
