Established in 1896 by Ernest F Hooley to acquire c1,200 acres of rural land adjacent to the Manchester Ship Canal and develop it as an industrial estate, providing the necessary infrastructure. Marshall Stevens, 1852-1936, was general manager from 1897 and chairman, 1912-29. Expanded quickly 1914-18 and emerged as largest industrial estate in Europe accommodating major businesses many of them with North American connections. Established subsidiaries such as Port of Manchester Warehouses Ltd, 1914, and Trafford Park Cold Storage Co Ltd, 1918. After 1945 continued as a more widely based property business and latterly known as Trafford Park Estates Plc
