Established in 1908 by Gavin Morton, 1866-1954, formerly of Alexander Morton & Co of Carlisle, and William F Blackwood, a longstanding carpet manufacturer at Kilmarnock. 1938 acquired Cooke Sons & Co Ltd of Liversedge, Yorkshire, carpet manufacturers. Public company 1943. Developed rapidly after 1945 to become a major carpet producer. 1948 acquired Victoria Spinning Co Ltd of Dundee as an early step to vertical integration.
