Traced origins to 1790 when James Toplis started business. By 1811 he was 'surveyor of stock' to the leading Sun Fire Office. From 1824 auctioned fire salvage for insurance companies. 1867 known as Toplis & Harding. 1911 opened the first of many branch offices, at Manchester and Paris. Emerged as a major internationally spread loss adjusting and surveying business. From early 1920s other offices follow at New York, San Francisco, Alexandria, Shanghai, Los Angeles, Brussels, Milan, etc, etc, as well as in UK. Overseas offices begin to be appointed Lloyds agents. 1980s extensively reorganised when acquired, inter alia, by Resources Management Corp. 1986 sold to Abaco Investment Plc and later sold on to British & Commonwealth Shipping. Management buy out 1990. 1990s further restructured when many overseas offices bought by management
