Traced origins as booksellers to 1879 when established by Benjamin H Blackwell, d1924, and traded as B H Blackwell. Emerged as leading academic booksellers. Soon diversified into book publishing, establishing a Publications Dept in 1913, which was later managed by (Sir) Basil Blackwell, 1889-1984. From 1922 reorganised as Basil Blackwell & Mott Ltd. 1921 Basil Blackwell acquired Shakespeare Head Press which from 1942 was a subsidiary of Blackwell & Mott. In 1939 formed Blackwell Scientific Publications Ltd to publish/distribute scientific books and, from 1950s, journals. 1950s general publishing emerged as, inter alia, leading school textbook publishers but by 1980s refocused on journal publishing especially for societies in social sciences and humanities where it became an international leader. 2001 Blackwell Publishers and Blackwell Science merged to form Blackwell Publishing Ltd. 2007 acquired by Wiley to become its Wiley Blackwell division, leading international publishers of scholarly journals and also books. Bookselling business continues with c60 branches in ownership of Blackwell family [2023]
