Notes:

Established at Chiswick in 1864 as Steam Carriage & Wagon Co by John I Thornycroft. Built a few steam road vehicles initially but focused on light craft and, from 1877, fast warships for Royal Navy. Incorporated as John I Thornycroft & Co in 1872. Shipbuilding moved to Woolston, Southampton, in 1904. In 1890s started again to make steam road vehicles and established Thornycroft Steam Wagon Co Ltd. Moved from Chiswick to Basingstoke in 1898. Built motor vehicles there, especially lorries, buses and military vehicles, from very early 1900s until 1961 when acquired by Associated Commercial Vehicles Ltd, although gave up bus production in the mid-1930s [2024]
