A Canadian media business initially owning newspapers and radio stations in Canada, established by Roy Thomson (later Lord Thomson of Fleet), 1894-1976, in c1931. Post 1945 made substantial media acquisitions in UK including Scotsman Publications Ltd in 1953 and Kemsley Newspapers Ltd, owners inter alia of The Sunday Times, in 1959. The latter business was subsequently known as The Thomson Organisation Ltd. 1956 established Scottish Television Ltd to operate the independent television franchise in Scotland. Later acquired The Times. By 1960s a major UK newspaper, periodical and book publishing and printing business with substantial television interests in Scotland. Mid 1960s built a travel businesses through acquisition, inter alia, of Sky Tours and Lunn Poly and Britannia Airways. UK interests much reduced in 1980s and 90s
