Traced origins to Blackie, Fullerton & Co, publishers at Edinburgh and Glasgow, John Blackie being the leading partner. 1819 diversified into printing. Early on operated as two partnerships, one in Glasgow, the other in Edinburgh. 1829 acquired Andrew & J M Duncan, printers to University of Glasgow. From late 1830s the two businesses came under full control of Blackie family when known as Blackie & Sons, publishers, and W G Blackie & Co, printers. Subsequently merged as Blackie & Son Ltd, a public company, in 1890. At various times specialised in religious, reference, educational, children's and scientific books. Sold books by subscription. Ceased publishing 1990s
