Notes:

William Symington, 1764-1831, was a mechanical engineer much concerned with development of steam engine in Scotland, especially early marine engines and, more successfully, for mines. Worked much in conjunction with Carron Co who appointed him its engineer in 1790. In 1788-89, with James Taylor, 1753-1825, designed and built first steam engine (for a paddle steamer) which met with limited success. Designed first practical steamship, the Charlotte Dundas, which was completed in 1803 and operated that year on Scottish canals in order to demonstrate practicability. Also interests in coal mining. Noted for his dispute with Taylor, 1824-85, over who should be credited for design of first marine engine
