Traced origins to C S Swan & Hunter Ltd established 1872 and incorporated 1895. 1903 merged with Wigham Richardson & Co Ltd to form Swan Hunter & Wigham Richardson Ltd and emerged as a leading shipbuilding business. Wighams had been established in 1860 and incorporated 1899. Acquired other businesses including Wallsend Slipway & Engineering Co Ltd, which made engines, from 1912 and Barclay Curle & Co Ltd in 1912. After 1918 made many acquisitions. In 1966 merged with Smith's Dock Co Ltd to form Swan Hunter Group. In late 1960s Swans' Tyne interests merged with those of Vickers, Hawthorne Leslie and John Readhead & Sons Ltd to form Swan Hunter & Tyne Shipbuilders Ltd. Soon afterwards acquired assets of Furness Shipbuilding Co Ltd. 1969 renamed Swan Hunter Shipbuilders Ltd. Subsequently nationalised as part of British Shipbuilders and subsequently privatised. In receivership 1993 and name subsequently revived
