Traces origins to John Sutcliffe, 1813-77, who established in 1862 his business as shipping and forwarding agents at Grimsby for the Anglo French Steamship Co. 1866 associated with the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway Co [and later Great Central Railway Co and later London & North Eastern Railway Co] in handling its shipping arrangements at Grimsby. 1872 known as John Sutcliffe & Son. From 1870s operated own small coastal vessels until c1917 and came to have branches in many British ports. Lost railway agency work 1920s. 1936 reorganised as John Sutcliffe& Son (Grimsby) Ltd and John Sutcliffe & Son (Agencies) Ltd when shipping agents and stevedors etc. CFrom 1870s came to operate its own vessels. Continuing in ownership of Sutcliffe family 1980s
