Notes:

Traced origins to John Summers, 1822-76, a nail maker by 1851. From 1852 established iron works and foundry at Stalybridge and made nails, nail strips, hoops, etc. Established major iron and steel works at Shotton from mid 1890s. Diversified into production of galvanised steel in which emerged as UK leader by 1909. Acquired, inter alia, Shelton Iron Steel & Coal Co Ltd of Stoke on Trent. Ordered from USA and commissioned a major hot strip mill from 1937. Fully integrated iron and steel plant by early 1950s. Nationalised 1951 and subsequently privatised. 1967 renationalised as part of British Steel Corp, the site subsequently developing as a major centre for production of coated strip products
