Traced origins to 1848 when established by William Storey and others as William Storey & Co to make table baize, oil cloth, tarpaulings, etc. By 1850s known as Storey Brothers & Co. Grew rapidly under (Sir) Thomas Storey and his brothers from 1851. Emerged as major manufacturers of linoleum, floorcoverings, etc, with innovative decorative finishes. Also emerged as a leading Lancaster business. From 1890s formed Rembrandt Intaglio Printing Co Ltd to develop / exploit innovative rotogravure printing processes which were applied to cloth printing; it was fully acquired 1923. 1902 incorporated. Post 1945 production of coverings using plastic, especially, vinyl, and man made fibres became its core business. 1957 public company. 1977 acquired by Turner & Newall Ltd
