Established in 1818 as Blake Garnett & Co by William Garnett, James Blake and John Stephenson. Later in 1818 acquired London type foundry of William Caslon, who had broken away from the main Caslon business of H W Caslon, and moved it to Sheffield. Known as Stephenson Blake & Co from 1841. Received gold medal at 1851 Great Exhibition. 1914 incorporated. Acquired other typefounders after 1900, eg Sir Charles Reed & Sons Ltd, Thorowgood Fry James & Grover, H W Caslon & Co Ltd, etc. By c1960 last surviving independent typefounder. Ceased production as typefounders in c2005 but continued as precision engineers having diversified into toolmaking in early 20th century
