Notes:

William Stephens, 1731-1803, was a British merchant at Lisbon who enjoyed various trade monopolies granted him by government, most importantly glass production especially for window glass. 1769 took charge of glassworks at Marinha Grande, developing it into a major business and acquiring an enormous fortune. On his death, glassworks developed by his brother, John James, until 1827
