Developed in 1850s as ironstone mines by two businesses, Seymour & Partners, which was relatively short lived, and Charles and William Palmer who later established extensive shipbuilding, iron and steel making, mining and other interests as Palmers Shipbuilding & Iron Co Ltd. In c1854 the latter established Staithes Ironstone Co and subsequently transport infrastructure such as tramways and Port Mulgrave harbour. 1899 formed Grinkle Park Mining Co Ltd to hold the important Grinkle Mine
