Traced origins to 1796 when established by John E Spicer, 1766-1845, a papermaker at Alton, Hampshire, who by 1839 had given up papermaking for wholesale stationery. In 1865 his sons divided and set up two separate wholesale stationery businesses, Spicer Bros, in succession to the old firm, and James Spicer & Sons. The latter also manufactured stationery, especially envelopes, while the former also operated paper mills at Eynsford, Kent, and Sawston, Cambridgeshire, as well as stationery factories. The two firms merged in 1922 as Spicers Ltd. 1963 Spicer family sold business to Reed Paper Group. 1973 diversified into wholesale of office products generally. 1993 acquired by D S Smith Plc
