Established late 18th century [1796?] by Thomas Spalding, 1762-1819, as Spalding & Routh, stationers in Drury Lane, Covent Garden. c1812 known as Spalding & Hodge, 'wholesale, retail and for exportation' stationers. Continued by Thomas Spalding, 1805-87, who joined firm in 1818. By 1880s had papermills in Kent and at Northampton, a warehouse in Drury Lane and a depot in Paris. Incorporated 1901. Sometime operated major paper mills at Horton Kirby, South Darenth, Kent. Emerged as leading paper merchants, papermakers and manufacturing and wholesale stationers in particular supplying book and typewriter paper. An early client was 'Illustrated London News'. Connected with Willesden Waterproof Paper Co. Premises in Covent Garden rebuilt in 1906. Still family owned 1939
