Ancient mines that produced mostly copper and but in 20th century much tin. Incorporated as South Crofty Ltd in 1906. In effect comprised three mines, viz: South Wheal Crofty which operated for most of 19th century with short intervals but was marginally profitable; East Wheal Crofty which was originally known an Trevenson Mine but which was renamed in 1830 and in 1915 acquired by South Crofty Ltd; and New Cook's Kitchen Mine which was acquired by South Wheal Crofty in 1894. Expanded with great success in 20th century, acquiring other mines in order to enhance reserves. In 1967 mine owned by St Piran Ltd. Subsequently passed into ownership of others including Rio Tinto Zinc. Mine closed 1998
