Traced origins to Archibald Smith and E N Mackenzie who, in 1874, started as agents at Zanzibar. 1877 formed Smith Mackenzie & Co with Archibald Gray and (Sir) Edwyn Dawes of Gray Dawes & Co of London thereby becoming part of a much wider trading network of Mackinnon Mackenzie based on London, India and the Far East. Imported goods; exported rubber, ivory, cloves, etc; acted as agents for insurance, shipping, etc, companies; etc, etc. 1879 opened briefly also at Mozambique. From 1888 agents for Imperial British East Africa Co. 1890s opened at Mombasa. 1936 incorporated as a subsidiary of Gray Dawes & Co Ltd and 1952 converted to a public company. 1958 acquired by Gray Dawes and subsequently subsumed into the Inchcape Group
