George Sitwell, c1601-67, was a landowner who developed an iron making business on his estate at Plumbley, nr Eckington, from mid 1630s, initially in partnership with his father in law, Henry Wigfall. Alone in 1650s developed a major complex at Foxbrooke, Renishaw, and by 1660s was leading ironmaster in Derbyshire / Nottinghamshire with furnaces, forges, slitting mills, etc, at several sites. Also made finished goods such as saws, nails, etc. Business inherited by his family who maintained iron making and merchanting functions at Renishaw and London to late 17th century
