Traced origins to 1858 when Siemens & Halske of Germany established a submarine cable making plant in London. William Siemens was London-based while his brother, Werner von Siemens, was in Germany. Reorganised 1865 with establishment of Siemen Brothers in London although the German and British businesses remained closely linked through to the 1950s. In UK initially made submarine telegraph cable from large works in Woolwich, established in 1866. Also involved in submarine cable laying and soon after in telegraph/telephone equipment and electricity generating/lighting equipment. Incorporated 1880. 1903 opened major works at Stafford. Developed to become a leading electrical engineering business with interests early on in electrical cables and wires, dynamos and alternators, equipment for electric tramways and railways, lamp manufacture, telegraphic, telephone and radio equipment, etc. 1956 acquired by AEI Ltd and subsequently merged with Edison Swan Electric Co Ltd to form the operating company of Siemens Edison Swan Ltd
