Traced origins to 1830 when William Sewell Shuttleworth, 1803-63, established a wholesale tea merchant's business out of the earlier business of Foreshaw, Thornton & Hart. Sometime located in Fenchurch Street with later processing plant in Bermondsey. By 1854 contractors to Royal Navy. Diversified into coffee roasting. Reformed in 1878 and again in 1892 and soon after diversified into cocoa, manufacturing cocoa powder in Bermondsey. Soon after started to make chocolate and thereafter business expanded rapidly. Incorporated 1919 when described as 'wholesale and export chocolate manufacturers, tea, cocoa and coffee dealers'. In inter war years supplied bulk chocolate to other manufacturers as well as specialist products such as Easter eggs. 1928 acquired by Rowntree and ceased trading 1973 [2023]
