Established in 1913 by (Sir) Alfred Chester Beatty, 1875-1968, as an international mining business which after 1918 developed major mines in Siberia and Serbia (lead and zinc), West Africa (diamonds) and Zambia (copper) at Roan Antelope and Mufulira mine. On their nationalisation acquired other mining interests as a mining finance house. In about late 1970s acquired by British Petroleum Co Ltd. In 1950 Beatty moved from UK to Ireland where he collected art and books which were subsequently gifted to Irish institutions
