Traced origins to William Schermuly, 1857-1929, who, in 1912, began to supply shipping companies with devices for firing rescue lines which he had perfected by 1897. 1920 devised pistol rocket apparatus. Later made marine distress signals. Established factory in 1926 at Cheam and incorporated as Schermuly Pistol Rocket Apparatus Ltd. Moved to Newdigate in 1937. 1973 acquired by Bryant & May and sometime subsumed into Pains Wessex Ltd, pyrotechnics manufacturer
