Traced origins to 1671 when established as an ordnance depot. 1717 the Royal Brass Factory - a gun foundry - was established there. 1805 renamed Royal Arsenal. Developed as a major industrial centre using advanced machinery, designed by leading engineers, to make armaments and ammunition and, latterly, to undertake explosives research. Sir John Anderson, 1814-86, important in its modernisation mid century. Expanded rapidly 1914-18 to employ c80,000 people. Became part of Royal Ordnance Factory organisation. Run down after 1945 and finally closed 1990s
