Traced origins to Louis A C A Steigenberger, d1814, who established a colour making business in London in 1760. By 1780 based at Homerton. Early on also made black lead, sealing wax, etc. 1879 incorporated as Lewis Berger & Sons Ltd. In 20th century emerged as a leading paint manufacturing business. From 1934 main plant developed at Chadwell Heath. 1960 merged with Jenson & Nicholson Ltd to form Berger, Jenson & Nicholson Ltd. 1970 acquired by Hoechst AG when business subsumed into its Herberts Group
