Traced origins to late 1850s when established by local landowner, Lord Dudley, who already possessed coal and iron ore mines, limestone quarries, etc. By late 19th century had diversified into steel making and also manufactured ship's chains and cables. At end of 19th century sold but reverted to Dudley family in 1893. Subsequently known as Earl of Dudley's Round Oak Works Ltd and, from 1936, as Round Oak Steel Works Ltd. Nationalised 1951 and denationalised 1953 by sale to Tube Investments Ltd (TI). By 1977 jointly owned by TI and British Steel Corp. Plant closed 1982
