Established as merchants in Manchester in 1799 by Nathan Mayer Rothschild, 1777-1836, in particular participating in the textile trade. He was son of Meyer Amschel Rothschild, 1744-1812, of Frankfurt, founder of the Rothschild banking dynasty. Transferred to London in 1809 and quickly emerged as a leading merchant bank working in tandem with other Rothschild family houses in Europe. Made bond issues for overseas governments and leading UK corporates. 1850s-1960s operated the Royal Mint Refinery. Acquired Suez Canal shares for British government in 1875. Financed gold mining industry in South Africa being associated in particular with Wernher, Beit & Co. Incorporated 1970 as N M Rothschild & Sons Ltd. Continues
