(Sir) Joseph Robinson, 1840-1929, was involved in South African diamond mining from late 1860s. By 1880s developed extensive gold mining interests, an important element of which was Randfontein Estates Co Ltd. By 1900 reckoned the gold mining leader in South Africa. From late 1890s lived much in London. Retired from business 1916
