Notes:

Traced origins to Charles Rivington, 1688-1742, who started bookselling in 1711 through acquisition of the business of the leading bookseller, Richard Chiswell. Published almost immediately focusing on theological and educational subjects and developed a leading London business. Business inherited by his sons, John, 1720-92, and James, 1724-1802, who dissolved their partnership in 1756. Subsequently James went to United States while John continued religious publishing with success in London where, inter alia, he published for the Society for the Propagation of Christian Knowledge and was closely associated with Church of England. The business passed to further generations and was various styled F & C Rivington, F C & R Rivington, etc. Sold to Longmans 1890 but family publishing interests briefly revived by, inter alia, Septimus Rivington, and styled Rivington & Co from 1897 [2024]
