Traced origins to William Bentall, a farmer, who made ploughs at Goldhanger from c1790s and established a small foundry to facilitate this. 1805 established new works at Heybridge and in 1806 produced first steam threshing machine. From 1839 known as E H Bentall & Co when owned by Edward H Bentall, d1898, and in 1840s expanded rapidly following introduction of new cultivator and other machinery which sold nationally and internationally. Later made petrol engines and then briefly and unsuccessfully motor cars. From 1920s made valves. 1919 merged with others to form Agricultural & General Engineers Ltd which collapsed in c1933 when Bentalls reacquired by Bentall family. 1946 public company. 1961 acquired by Acrow Group
