Traced origins to 1928 and establishment of Broadcast Relay Service Ltd at Clacton on Sea. Delivered radio services via cables to private homes from high quality receivers. Developed rapidly in 1930s and after 1945 diversified into delivery of television services via cable. This led to involvement in related areas such as television set manufacture, television rental services, broadcasting, programme making and electronics manufacture, especially simulators, etc. 1947 substantial interest acquired by British Electric Traction Co Ltd (BET) which controlled business from 1971. Business renamed in 1957 Rediffusion Ltd. 1954, with BET and Associated Newspapers, formed Associated Rediffusion Ltd, later Rediffusion Television Ltd, to obtain independent television franchise for London weekday services. Contract subsequently lost in 1960s.
