Traced origins to 1889 when established by Fred Read, 1854-1906, to make and sell a food preservative, later known as Polarine, to dairy industry and, to a lesser extent, to meat processing, confectionery, etc, industries. Then known as manufacturing chemists. Quickly also developed an associated business as suppliers of sundries to dairy industry. Sometime based at Macclesfield and in 1903 moved to Wilmslow. With coming of pasteurization and refrigeration moved away from preservatives to focus on selling agencies and installation of pasteurization, refrigeration, etc, and other products including bottles, crates, etc. Closely associated with Mallinsons in developing and marketing of new dairying/bottling/etc machinery. 1963 merged with others to form Associated Crates Group which in 1977 became part of Tyrer Group. Subsequently bought by management
