Traces origins to William Rathbone, 1726-89, who established c1742 a merchanting business in Liverpool. Later also shipowners until 1889. From 1770s dealt in cotton and became major participants in the North Atlantic cotton trade in 19th century. Also important in China trade and tea importing. In 19th century very important international merchants and financiers of international trade. In 20th century emerged as a financial services business focusing on asset management and banking for private clients.
